Lahore: Hassaan Khan Niazi, the nephew of Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, is in trouble.
He has been handed over to the military for trial over his alleged involvement in the May 9 vandalism at the Corps Commander House, a police report submitted to the Lahore High Court on Friday said.
Niazi, who had been in hiding since the nationwide protests of May 9 and 10, was arrested by the police from Abbottabad, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on August 13, reported PTI.
Following the arrest of Imran by paramilitary Rangers from the Islamabad High Court premises in a corruption case on May 9, a large number of Imran’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party workers stormed Corps Commander House — also known as Jinnah House — and set it on fire after vandalising it. There was unprecedented anti-government protests and violence across Pakistan after Imran was taken into custody. He was later released on bail.
Niazi, who is the party chief’s focal person on legal affairs, was handed over to Quetta police a day after his arrest, which was confirmed by his father Hafeezullah Khan on social media.
During Friday’s hearing, Additional Advocate General Ghulam Sarwar Nahang submitted the police report before Justice Sultan Tanveer Ahmed of the High Court.
Nahang informed the court about Hassaan’s trial in a military court and his handover to the army. He also directed Hassaan’s meeting to be arranged with his parents, The News International reported.
