New Delhi: President Droupadi Murmu on Monday appointed former Supreme Court judge Justice V Ramasubramanian as the ninth Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The post had been lying vacant since Justice (retd) Arun Kumar Mishra’s tenure ended on June 1.
Priyank Kanoongo, who earlier served as a chairperson of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), and Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi have also been appointed as Members of the rights panel.
In June, Justice Sarangi was appointed as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court for a brief tenure of 15 days. He also served as Acting Chief Justice (CJ) of Orissa High Court on superannuation of Justice Subhasis Talapatra, the then Chief Justice, on October 3, 2023.
A native of Odisha’s Nayagarh, he was sworn in as a permanent judge of Orissa High Court on June 20, 2013.
