Koraput: An excise inspector and a constable were grievously injured after being attacked by ganja mafia in Kotpad area of Odisha’s Koraput district.
The incident took place near Ghodahada village under the jurisdiction of Kotpad police station late on Friday night when excise department personnel had gone to the area to conduct a raid to check the illicit ganja business, sources said.
The injured two, identified as Inspector Durbadhala Biswal and constable Meghnada Sabar, have been admitted to Saheed Laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital (SLNMCH). Their condition was stated to be critical.
Following a tip-off, teams of Jeypore-Borigumma excise range went to the forest near Ghodahada village in three vehicles to nab ganja smugglers late in the night. As one team comprising five members including Biswal and Sabar entered the forest, around 20 to 25 miscreants attacked them with sharp weapons.
The Inspector and the constable suffered grievous injuries on their heads. They were immediately rushed to the SLNMCH.
On being informed, a team from Kotpad police station rushed to area ge and carried out raids in the village as well as in the forest. But the ganja smugglers managed to give the police a slip and disappeared into the forest taking advantage of darkness.
