Berhampur: Excise officials seized more than Rs 18 lakh during a raid on a bus on suspicion of ganja smuggling in Odisha’s Ganjam district on Thursday.
According to sources, on a tip-off that ganja was being smuggled in the bus, the Excise officials stopped the vehicle at Lanjipalli bypass in Berhampur of the district. During checking of the bus, they came across a packet hidden in the luggage compartment.
On opening the packet, the officials found more than Rs 18 lakh inside it. They have seized the money and detained the passenger who claimed its ownership.
He has been identified as Sanjay Sahu of Givindpur village under Kuakhia block of Jajpur district. He claimed himself to be a cashewnut trader, the sources said.
