Facelift Planned For Puri’s Swargadwar

Puri: The Swargadwar crematorium in Puri will soon have a new look with the district administration planning to renovate the site and streamline services.

According to the plan, the narrow cremation ground will be expanded. The cremation area will be made encroachment free for the convenience of people performing the last rites of their near and dear ones.

The makeover will be carried out in line with a similar project at the Mahaprasthanam crematorium in Andhra Pradesh. It will be undertaken as a part of several reforms suggested by the Supreme Court.

Notably, Puri Collector Balwant Singh and the additional collector had reviewed the Mahaprasthanam crematorium during a visit to Telangana and Andhra Pradesh two months ago.

Likewise, a team of experts from Hyderabad had visited the Puri crematorium. Following this, a detailed project report (DPR) was prepared.

The district administration has decided to upgrade facilities and streamline services at Swargadwar so that people who come there for performing the last rites of their relatives don’t face any problem. These will include:

  1. A permanent roof will be constructed above the places where the last rites are performed.
  2. The problem of parking and ambulance services will be solved.
  3. Waiting rooms and toilets facilities will be available for bereaved relatives.
  4. Tea and snacks stalls will be opened near Swargadwar.
  5. The Swargadwar premises will be cleaned.
