Hyderabad: A Telangana politician has issued a warning to IPL side Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and levelled charges against its captain David Warner.
Pointing out the absence of local talent in the Sunrisers squad, former minister Danam Nagender charged the team management of irregularities in selection process and claimed that many deserving players from Hyderabad have not been given the chance to play in IPL.
This follows the IPL players auction where Hyderabad players were hardly in demand.
He warned the team to pick players from the city or drop ‘Hyderabad’ from its name. He also condemned the fact that experienced Australian opener Warner captains the team in IPL despite being involved in match-fixing.
“Hyderabad has got a good name… We condemn Warner being captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad as he is involved in match-fixing,” the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) MLA said.
Nagender seems to have confused the 2018 ball-tampering scandal with match-fixing. Warner was banned for a year by Cricket Australia for his role in the infamous ball-tampering incident in South Africa. He missed international cricket and also the 2018 IPL. Warner hasn’t, however, faced any charges for match-fixing.
“There are many deserving players in Hyderabad, but only Mohammed Siraj has made it. If players from here are not selected, we will protest against IPL from being conducted at Rajiv Gandhi Stadium,” said Nagender.
