A message has been doing rounds on WhatsApp claiming that a site from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) can help you check authorised use of your mobile SIM.
The message is true. DoT has built this website to check unauthorised SIM cards that are plaguing the nation. The portal tafcop.dgtelecom.gov.in allows individuals to check usage of a mobile number without the permission or knowledge of the current user and lets them block numbers issued in their name.
Currently, a maximum of 9 mobile connections can be issued for one individual. The number is 18 for eSIM users as required in some Apple devices.
By logging on to the site, one can enter their phone number and a message on the number of connections active in their names. Any unauthorised number can be blocked on request from here.
Right now, the service is only available to users of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
