FACT CHECK: Odisha’s Chopper Crash Victim: Officer, Airman Or Jawan?

Bhubaneswar: Media reports have variously described Junior Warrant Officer (JWO) Rana Pratap Das, the Odisha native who was killed in the IAF chopper crash in Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor, as “Officer”, “Airman” and “Jawan”. Odisha Bytes does a fact-check.

Das, a native of a village in Talcher in Angul district, served in the Indian Air Force (IAF) and held the rank of Junior Warrant Officer (JWO).

A JWO comes under IAF’s Airmen ranks:

* Master Warrant Officer

* Warrant Officer

* Junior Warrant Officer

* Sergeant

* Corporal

* Leading Air Craftsman

* Air Craftsman

Only soldiers are called as jawans.
