The Jim Corbett National Park is one of India’s most-visited tiger reserves.
The name itself evokes a certain thrill among adventure lovers. But it could soon get a new name.
If Union Minister of State for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ashwini Choubey has his way, it could be renamed as Ramganga National Park.
ANI quoted the director of the national park Rahul as saying that Choubey wanted the name of the national park to be restored as Ramganga National Park. The park’s name was changed to Jim Corbett National Park in 1956.
Established in 1936, Project Tiger was launched at Jim Corbett National Park in 1973.
Spread over 520 square kilometres, Jim Corbett National Park consists of hills, marshy depressions, riverine belts, grasslands and a large lake.
The minister informed that a tiger safari will be set up at Dhela rescue centre in Ramnagar. The proposal has been put forward and a formal announcement is likely soon.
Another tiger safari has been proposed in Pakhro by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for which work is already underway.
Compensation of Rs 15 lakh will be given to those who will have to be relocated outside the national parks.
