Kyiv: Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky has rarely missed a chance to catch the world’s attention on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine ever since Vladimir Putin ordered a special military operation against hIs eastern European neighbour on February 24.
With Russia showing no signs of an end to hostilities almost nine months into the war, Zelensky is reportedly seeking a big stage to be heard – the World Cup final at Doha.
According to CNN, the Ukraine President has requested the FIFA to let him share a video message with the world, ahead of the Sunday night’s final between Argentina and France.
Though FIFA has rejected Zelensky’s request, talks are ongoing between Ukraine and the sport’s world governing body, CNN added.
Zelensky earlier appealed for peace and assistance at government and cultural events, including Israel’s parliament, US lawmakers, Grammy Awards, Cannes Film Festival and G20 summit.
Zelensky, who refused to leave Kyiv and has been the face of Ukraine’s brave and spirited resistance in the face of repeated Russian strikes, has also given interviews and engaged in conversations with journalists, famous TV presenters and columnists.
FIFA’s philosophy has been to keep political messaging out of its showcase tournament.
FIFA also barred footballers from wearing rainbow-themed anti-discrimination armbands, and fans from displaying flags besides those of participating teams.
The World Cup organisers, however, have made an exception for Palestinian flag, which has been featured predominantly during the matches in Qatar.
Russia was banned from the tournament following the invasion of Ukraine.
