Berhampur: An elderly couple was robbed of gold ornaments by some miscreants, impersonating as police personnel, near Kalyan Mandap at Jayaprakash Nagar here on Sunday. The couple from Bhubaneswar were in the city to attend a wedding.
According to sources, the miscreants hailed the couple while they were walking down the lane and introduced themselves as cops. After showing their fake police identity cards, they asked them to remove all gold ornaments to avoid falling victim to looters. Once the couple put the valuables in an envelope, the trio managed to exchange it with another envelope having stones and fled the spot.
Requesting people to refrain from entertaining such requests from strangers, Berhampur SP Pinak Mishra said efforts are on to identify the culprits from CCTV footage.
