Nabarangpur: Four persons were arrested for allegedly duping a businessman by selling him fake gold bricks for Rs 10 lakh in Odisha’s Nabarangpur district on Thursday, police said.
Claiming to have unearthed a fake gold racket with the arrest, police said efforts are on to nab three others involved in the fraud.
While two of the accused are from Ichabatiguda in Nabarangpur, the other two are from Khaliguda village under Dabugaon block. A sum of Rs 4.60 lakh, three mobile phones, knives and other sharp weapons have been seized from the possession of the arrested persons.
According to police, the four accused called a man from Berhampur to sell him gold bricks over a week ago. However, when he sought to examine the gold bricks, they threatened him with knives and extorted Rs 10 lakh from him.
The duped man lodged a complaint with Nabarangpur police on Wednesday. Basing on his complaint, a special team of police conducted raids and nabbed the accused persons, police said.
Additional Superintendent of Police JK Behera said the accused persons confessed to the crime, while Rs 4.6 lakh and the duplicate gold bricks were seized from them. The fake gold brick weighed around 4.3 kg.
A manhunt has been launched to nab the remaining three persons who are on the run. The remaining amount will be recovered after they are arrested, he said.
