Balangir: Police on Monday claimed to have nabbed a fake Maoist in Balangir district.
The youth identified as Pitabash Dharua (23), a resident of Jampuri village under Belpada police limits in the district, had demanded Rs 2 lakh extortion money from one Rashmiranjan Panigrahi (47) of Gambhari village impersonating as a Maoist.
The accused had also demanded rice and edible oil from Panigrahi and threatened him with dire consequences, if he failed to obey his orders, police sources said.
Apprehending trouble, Panigrahi had sent 13 bags of rice and 15 litres of edible oil to Dharua, but did not give him the money that he had demanded.
Later, he lodged a complaint with the local police.
Acting on the complaint, the cops started investigation and managed to catch hold of the accused. Two mobile phones were seized from his possession, the sources added.
