Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly on Friday witnessed ‘high drama’ with BJP MLA from Deogarh Subash Chandra Panigrahi attempting suicide by consuming sanitiser in the House as a mark of protest and to draw the state government’s attention to farmers’ issue.
However, not everyone is impressed with his manner of protest. While some said that this act went against the dignity of the House, others sought an apology for setting a bad example for the public.
And with this started the hashtag #FakeSucide on Twitter.
Earlier in the day, BJD spokesperson Pratap Deb said that the suicide attempt in the State Assembly had opened an inglorious chapter in Indian politics.
“You can protest in a different manner. But threatening or attempting to commit is a heinous crime. As the BJD strongly condemns such an attempt, it stands by its demand that unless Panigrahi tenders unconditional apology, it will now allow the normal functioning of the House,” he added.
Opposition whip and BJP MLA of Keonjhar Mohan Majhi, however, defended his party colleague and said that he had no choice as the state government turned a deaf ear to his demands to facilitate procurement of paddy in the mandis.
