Baripada: Tension ran high at Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital on Monday after irate family members beat up the hospital superintendent following the death of a minor girl.
According to sources, family members of a Plus II student of Shyamakhunta area had admitted her to the medical college two days ago as she was suffering from Thalassemia.
When the girl succumbed to her illness on Monday, the irate family members alleging gross medical negligence barged into the chamber of hospital superintendent Baikunthanath Mahapatra and thrashed him.
The family members along with a few locals later staged a dharna by placing the body of the deceased in front of the hospital gate.
Talking to the media, the father of the deceased said his daughter was a sickle cell patient. Since she needed frequent blood transfusions, he had admitted her to the hospital on a number of occasions.
After 8 months, he had admitted his daughter to the hospital for blood transfusion. The hospital authorities, however, could arrange for blood despite repeated requests, he added.
