Paradip: Family members of a contractual worker, who was died in an accident at the wagon site of Odisha’s Paradip Port, staged a sit-in protest on Tuesday night.
The deceased contractual worker has been identified as Satya Subrat Dalei of Nabadia village under Kujang block in Jagatsinghpur district. He was working under the supervision of a private contractor company at the port.
According to sources, Dalei suffered critical injuries in the accident within the port premises on Sunday. Though he was provided medical treatment, he succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.
After his death, his family members and fellow workers staged a sit-in protest with his body, demanding Rs 50 lakh compensation and job to next of is kin. They continued their protest braving the winter chill at night.
On being informed, police reached the spot and tried to pacify the agitators to restore normalcy.
In October, another contractual worker Bholanath Swain from Dhanurbellari village under Jagatsinghpur district died in a similar manner in an accident inside the port premises. He was reportedly engaged as a surveyor by the port authorities.
After his death, his family members were made to run from pillar to post for his body. Upset with the attitude of the authorities, the irate family members and co-workers had then ransacked the security office near the main gate of Paradip Port.
