Jagatsinghpur: The family of a contractual worker, who reportedly died after coming under a moving forklift Odisha’s Paradip port, staged a dharna demanding adequate compensation on Friday.
According to sources, the worker, identified as Bholanath Swain of Dhanurbellari under Balikuda police limits in Jagatsinghpur district, was working in the international cargo terminal of the port when he was run over by the forklift on the jetty. Swain died on the spot.
The port authorities informed the local police who seized the body and sent it for post-mortem.
Swain’s family members, who alleged that they were not informed about is death, had to go to different hospitals to take the body. Later, they locked the gate of the cargo termial and staged a dharna before it.
Some workers also joined them in the protest. After continuing the protest for a long time, they became impatient as no official from the port came to meet them. They allegedly also ransacked the security office near the terminal’s main gate.
Swain’s family members demanded adequate compensation and a job for one of them. They also threatened to intensify their agitation if their demands are not fulfilled.
