Keonjhar: Tension prevailed at a private hospital as the family of a woman patient staged protest after she died during an operation in Odisha’s Keonjhar district on Monday.
According to sources, Nalinikanta Mohanta of Padua area under Champua police limits had admitted his wife Pushpalata Mohanta in the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) for operation of a tumour in her stomach.
Later, some brokers in the DHH convinced Nalinikanta that they would ensure better treatment in a private hospital near Church Square in the town and admitted Pushpalata there.
The officials of the private hospital took Rs 40,000 from Nalinikanta for performing laparoscopy on his wife. Some time after she was taken to the operation theatre, the doctors announced her death.
Enraged over sudden death of his wife in the OT, Nalinikanta and his family staged a protest with her body outside the hospital alleging negligence of the doctors. They demanded action against the hospital staff as well as the brokers.
On being informed, local police rushed to the spot and took Pushpalata’s body from the family after assuring them of investigating into the matter. The police have registered a case after Nalinikanta filed a complaint and sent the body for post-mortem.
