Malkangiri: The bank accounts of farmers in Malkangiri district are being allegedly used for transactions worth lakhs of rupees without their knowledge.
According to reports, over 90 accounts held by farmers in the Koraput Cooperative Bank branch at Badili are used for the surreptitious transactions almost daily by unknown persons.
The farmers told the media that amounts ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000 are deposited in their accounts and withdrawn the next day without their information. Surprisingly, in most of the cases, their thumbprints are used to withdraw the money deposited a day earlier.
They stated that they had opened the accounts to avail the benefits of government schemes and not to operate them daily. They suspected the role of some bank officials in the mysterious transactions.
While the innocent farmers expressed resentment over the use of their bank accounts, they were yet to file any police complaint.
Normally, money under various government schemes is directly deposited in the bank accounts of the beneficiaries.
