Farmers’ Protest: Hollywood Actress Susan Sarandon Joins Celebrity Chorus Of Support

New Delhi: Hollywood star Susan Sarandon on Saturday joined the list of celebrities who have voiced support for the farmers’ protest in India. The Oscar-winning actress also asked her fans to be informed about the agitation.

“Standing in solidarity with the #FarmersProtest in India. Read about who they are and why they’re protesting below,” Sarandon tweeted and shared a link to a New York Times report titled, “Why Are Farmers Protesting in India?”

Actress Jameela Jamil also extended support for the protest in an Instagram post. The Good Place star wrote in a note that she has been repeatedly met with misogynistic abuses for raising the concerns of the protesting farmers, The Indian Express reported.

“I have repeatedly spoken about the farmers in India over the past few months and what is happening there at the moment. But each time I do I am met with death and rape threats. So while you are pressurising me in my DMS please keep in mind that I am a human being who has limitations as to what I can handle. I do however maintain my solidarity is of course for the farmers in India and everyone fighting for their rights during this protest. I hope you are also pressuring men to speak up on this subject too as they are far less likely to be attacked the way women in the public eye are,” she wrote in her Instagram post.

Earlier on Tuesday, international pop star Rihanna had caused a massive uproar in the country when she tweeted a news article about internet services being shut down around New Delhi amid the farmers’ protest. “Why aren’t we talking about this?!,” she had written in her tweet. Later, Swedish teenage activist Greta Thunberg and stars like Lily Singh, Jay Sean and Amanda Cerny also extended their support for the protest.

Following these comments, the External Affairs Ministry issued a statement, saying that “certain vested interest groups” were succeeding in getting “international support against India”.

Subsequently, a host of Bollywood celebrities, including Akshay Kumar, Ajay Devgn, Karan Johar, Ekta Kapoor and Suniel Shetty, put out statements supporting the government stand with the hashtag “India against propaganda”.
