New York: Strong women have always been his greatest inspiration, and the Spring/Summer 2021 collection, which he unveiled at New York Fashion Week on Wednesday, was no different.
Here we are talking about Odisha-born designer of international repute Bibhu Mohapatra.
The shift that he experienced post-COVID saw him going back to his roots and seeking inspiration from Amrita Sher-Gil, the revolutionary woman artist and the originator of modern art in India who challenged the norms.
What sets this collection apart is the use of chartreuse, a bold ‘look at me’ colour (a combination of yellow and green), a tone signifying the artist’s fearless spirit.
“It signifies optimism and bravery and works on all skin tones,” Bibhu was quoted as saying by Daily Mail.
He has used tulle, chantilly lace and crepe along with embroideries for this 27-piece collection, dominated by more casual separates in cotton, twill and denim and formal wears.
The reason: He got mails from stores and clients for clothing that can be worn at home events.
Not to disappoint, it also includes aesthetically-appealing yet dramatic gowns.
To bring the collection to life, Bibhu collaborated with New York-based filmmaker Shruti Ganguly and photographer JD Urban to create 2 minutes 40-second short film celebrating Amrita.
The role of Amrita is played by Surina Jindal.
