‘Final Agitation’: Anna Hazare To Begin Indefinite Hunger Strike From Jan 30; Know Why

Anna Hazare hunger strike

New Delhi: Anna Hazare has announced his ‘final agitation’.

The 88-year-old social activist will begin an indefinite hunger strike on January 30 in Maharashtra’s Ralegan Siddhi to protest against the state government’s failure to implement the long-pending Lokayukta Act.

Hazare, who reiterated that the law is crucial for public welfare but continues to be ignored despite repe

ated assurances, had in 2022 gone on a hunger strike in Ralegan Siddhi. He withdrew the protest after mediation by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and the Union Agriculture minister. A committee then drafted the legislation, and the Bill was passed by both Houses of the Maharashtra Assembly and forwarded to the President for assent.

However, the Act has still not been implemented.

The octogenarian said that he has written seven letters to CM Fadnavis, but not received any response.

Expressing frustration over the government’s silence, Hazare said, “I don’t understand why the government is not implementing it. A government is meant for public welfare, not for mere display.”

Hazare became a household name during the 2011 India Against Corruption movement at Jantar Mantar.
