Bhubaneswar: Odisha has finally earned the GI tag for Odisha Rasagola, the syrupy sweet offered to Lord Jagannath in Puri.
The certificate was granted to the sweet on Monday. It will be valid till February 22, 2028.
Registration of GI Application No. 612 in respect to ‘Odisha Rasagol’ falling in Class –29 and 30, makes it the latest entrant in the list of the GIs of India under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
The GI Application for ‘Odisha Rasagola’ was filed by Odisha Small Industries Corporation Limited (OSIC) under the MSME Department of the Government of Odisha. An association of Rasagola sweet-makers of Odisha, Utkala Mistanna Byebasayee Samiti, was the joint applicant.
The application was accepted, advertised and had been available from March 27.
Notably, West Bengal has bagged the GI tag for ‘Banglar Rasogolla’ in November 2017.
