Kendrapada: An employee of a private finance company, who allegedly faked his own kidnap to misappropriate the firm’s money, was detained by the police in Odisha’s Kendrapada district on Sunday.
The man, identified as Swagat Samal of Mahakalpada area in the district, was detained by Tantiapal marine police in the district after it was found that he had allegedly decamped with collected money of the company amounting to over Rs two lakh with an intention to embezzle the amount.
According to sources, he went missing around 7 pm while on his way back to office after collecting Rs 2.65 lakh. His motorcycle and sandals were found near Dak Bungalow under Tantiapal Marine police limits. He had received a call from his family around 6.45 pm but it was found switched off thereafter.
After going missing on Wednesday evening, Biswal was reportedly hiding in different places in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar. A missing report was lodged with the police. To enact his kidnap drama, he had left his bike and sandals by the roadside before going into hiding, said police.
During investigation, police came to know about him taking the finance company’s money and zeroed in on their investigation on him and eventually nabbed him from a place. The police are yet to reveal the name of the place from where they apprehended him.
An amount of Rs 1.23 lakh has already been recovered from his possession. Investigation is in progress and Biswal is being interrogated, they said.
