Lucknow: In a heart-wrenching tragedy, a woman and a child were killed after a fire broke out in the operation theatre (OT) of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPIMS), a state-run hospital, here on Monday.
The child was undergoing heart surgery when she succumbed due to suffocation caused by smoke.
The other victim was also on the operating table when she breathed her last.
According to reports, the fire broke out around 1 pm on the first floor, where the OT and wards are located.
“The fire has been brought under control. The exact case of fire is being investigated,” said Jugal Kishore, DIG, UP Fire Service Headquarters.
As the fire raged and the OT and other sections of the floor were engulfed in thick smoke, patients were shifted from the first floor’s post-operative wards to safer locations.
As patient parties blamed negligence of hospital staff for the fire, UP’s deputy CM Brajesh Pathak took stock of the situation and ordered a thorough inquiry, assuring that stringent action will be taken against those found responsible.
