Of Fireworks & Splendour: Gold Coast Games Inaugurated

Gold Coast: The much-awaited Gold Coast Commonwealth Games were inaugurated at Carrara stadium in Gold Coast on Wednesday.

Star shuttler PV Sindhu was the flag-bearer for the Indian contingent and led the players and officials.

The glittering opening ceremony was marked with a visual display of continental drifts and performances of tribes, symbolising their preservation.

Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall were present on the occasion along with Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

The Games, which will continue till April 15, will see the participation of more than 4500 athletes from 71 nations. A total of 275 gold medals are at stake across 23 events.
