Angul: In a first for Odisha, a minor boy has been awarded 20-year jail term by the Juvenile Court here for the gang rape of a minor girl.
The two courts, (Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADJ) Court and the Juvenile Court) also slapped a fine of Rs 5000, non-payment of which will result in an additional one-year jail term.
This is the first incident in Odisha after the sensational Nirbhaya case in Delhi where a minor boy has been awarded jail term in a gang rape case.
The incident had taken place when a college girl was gang raped by six youths including the minor boy on the outskirts of Angul in 2017. The accused had threatened to upload the video recording of the gang rape on social media if she informed the police.
Following a complaint lodged by the victim’s family, the police had arrested four youths who were awarded life sentence by the ADJ Court in 2018.
The ADJ court had referred the case of the minor boy to the Juvenile Court, which awarded him a 20-year jail term under Section 376 (d) of the IPC with a fine of Rs 5000.
