Bhubaneswar: For the first time, TIPSS (Trans jugular Intrahepatic Porto Systemic Shunt) was performed in Odisha by a team of doctors led by Dr Manas Ranjan Kar, senior consultant intervention radiologist, at Apollo Hospitals-Bhubaneswar.
The medical team performed the procedure successfully on a 43-year-old man suffering from liver cirrhosis with intractable ascites. The patient was discharged after three days. The patient was under the supervision of Dr Manoj Kumar Sahu, senior consultant, gastroenterologist, and Dr Kadambini Parida, consultant anaesthetist. COO & DMS Dr Alok Srivastava congratulated the team for successfully conducting the first TIPSS procedure in the state and said this will increase the scope in management of cirrhosis patients.
Cirrhosis of liver is quite common which leads to bleeding from stomach and oesophagus (food pipe) resulting in blood vomiting and fluid accumulation within the abdominal cavity (ascites). This happens due to high portal venous pressure created by cirrhotic liver. These patients undergone frequent endoscopic banding and abdominal fluid drainage for which patient undergoes severe mental and physical trauma. There are limited options in this type of patients, either to go for liver transplantation or TIPSS.
TIPSS is a minimally invasive endovascular procedure, where an artificial direct channel is created between inflow portal vein which supply blood to the liver and outflow hepatic vein which take away blood from liver into the heart.
