Karachi: This is what dreams are made of.
A fisherman in Pakistan got lucky with a big haul of a rare fish with multiple medicinal properties.
Haji Baloch, who is from the poor fishing village of Ibrahim Hyderi near Karachi, and his workers caught ‘Sowa’, which is known as golden fish from the Arabian Sea, reported PTI.
He managed to auction his haul of Sowa for a big price, thus becoming an overnight millionaire.
“The entire catch was sold for around 70 million rupees at Karachi harbour on Friday morning when fishermen auctioned off their catch,” informed Mubarak Khan of Pakistan Fishermen Folk Forum.
Sowa fish is rare and priceless as some substances from its stomach are known to have great healing and medicinal properties. A thread-like substance from the fish is also used in surgical procedures.
“We were fishing in the open sea of Karachi when we came across this huge cache of golden fish, and it was a windfall for us,” said Baloch.
“One fish fetches around 7 million rupees in the auction,” he informed.
The fish often weighs between 20 and 40 kg, and can grow up to 1.5 metres.
Sowa, which is much sought after in East Asian countries, comes near the coast only during breeding season.
