Paradip: A group of fishermen had a windfall when they netted rare Telia Borei fish during deep sea fishing off Paradip coast in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur.
As per reports, the fishermen from the port town had gone to deep sea and cast their nets on Monday night. On Tuesday morning, they found Telia fish among other species caught in the nets and brought those ashore.
On counting, the fishermen found there were 17 Telia fish and took those to the auction area. The rare fish weighed more than 3 quintal.
During auction, the catch of rare Telia fish was sold for a whopping Rs 18 lakh. A private firm bought these fish from the fishermen, the sources said.
It may be noted that fishermen had netted 17 rare Telia fish from the sea near Paradip and auctioned those for Rs 25 lakh in December last year.
The Telia fish has a high demand particularly among pharmaceutical companies for its medicinal value. The intestines of the rare fish are also sold at high costs in international market as it is used in manufacture of certain drugs.
