Kolkata: Five people have been arrested in connection with the mob assault on Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and MP Abhishek Banerjee in Sonarpur, South 24 Parganas. Among those taken into custody are Tapan Maity and Akash, who were allegedly identified in videos circulating from the incident.
Abhishek Banerjee was attacked by a mob while visiting victims of post-election violence in Sonarpur. Police have confirmed the arrests as part of the ongoin
g probe into the assault.
TMC chief and former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee immediately blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for the attack. The ruling party has firmly denied the allegations, though.
Mamata Banerjee also alleged that the authorities were actively trying to stop Abhishek Banerjee from receiving medical treatment. Speaking about the Saturday incident, she said: “Those who are in power are threatening all the hospitals and the maximum authorities not to admit Abhishek Banerjee because they don’t want him to be treated.”
Her comments were aimed squarely at the new BJP government in West Bengal.
Meanwhile, a medical note from Belle Vue Clinic said that Abhishek Banerjee, 38, was examined on May 30, 2026. The doctors found no major injuries, noting only a bruise on his chest. The note further stated that he was conscious, alert, oriented and able to communicate normally during the examination.
Doctors concluded that he did not need to be hospitalised. As a precaution, he was given normal saline, Ringer’s lactate and pain-relief medication.
