Balasore: A five-year-old boy reportedly died after falling into a pit filled with rainwater at Begunia village under Nilgiri block in Odisha’s Balasore district on Thursday.
According to sources, the mishap occurred when the boy was playing near the pit which was dug for a water project in the village. The child was pulled out after he accidentally slipped into the pit filled with rainwater and rushed to the nearby hospital where the doctors declared him dead.
The villagers alleged that the tragedy occurred because of negligence on the part of the contractor engaged in the project work.
Many low-lying areas in the state have been witnessing waterlogging due to incessant rains triggered by back-to-back low-pressure areas over the Bay of Bengal, while floodwaters have submerged vast areas in several districts.
