Flash Floods In Gujarat; Ahmedabad Inundated By Record-Breaking Rainfall

Ahmedabad: Flash floods have left Gujarat gasping for relief.

It’s been raining for the past few days, and according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the state received a staggering 18 inches of rainfall in just four hours.

Ahmedabad was among the worst-hit areas, having been inundated by a record 115 mm-plus rainfall in a matter of three hours on Sunday.

It was the maximum amount of rainfall recorded in a single day in the past 5 years.

Schools and colleges remained closed on Monday as Gujarat’s most populous city received 30% of the season’s quota of rainfall in the last three days.

There were scenes of vehicles submerged in different parts of Ahmedabad and other cities like Valsad.

Around 65 deaths have been reported in Gujarat and more than 3,000 people evacuated from different parts of the state.

NDRF and SDRF teams are conducting rescue work on an emergency mode. Helicopters had to be deployed to rescue distressed people in marooned villages.

With IMD predicting that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue over the next five days in Dang, Navsari and Valsad districts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday spoke to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Rajnikant Patel to take stock of the flood situation and assured full cooperation from the Centre.
