Foggy Condition In Odisha: ECoR Uses Detonators To Alert Train Drivers

Bhubaneswar: In view of foggy condition in many places in Odisha, the East Coast Railway (ECoR) has taken several precautionary steps for security of the train passengers.

As part of its procedure regarding operation of trains during fog and dense weather condition, the drivers have been instructed to regulate train speed depending on visibility conditions. In areas prone to dense fog, luminous and fluorescent strips have been painted in overhead equipment (OHE) masts, level crossings and busy traffic areas before an approaching “Stop Signal” to warn the loco pilots.

Detonators are being used to provide an audible indication to the locomotive crew that the train is approaching a signal. These detonators are flat, disc-shaped metal containers of red colour, which contain an explosive mixture that detonates with the application of pressure when the wheels of the locomotive pass over.

The Station Managers have been provided with adequate detonators and advised to assess whether visibility is impaired badly enough to warrant their use. The Railway staff posted at stations, cabins and gates have also been instructed to place detonators whenever there is thick fog to warn the loco pilots.

The train guards have been instructed to watch that the loco pilot does not exceed the prescribed speed limit during fog. They have been advised to use flasher lamps during day time.

Busy level crossings have been provided with luminous indication strips. Similarly, the rear portion of the trains has been fitted with LED flasher tail lights in addition to flashing red tail lamp and luminous indication strips.

The ECoR has also introduced cold weather patrolling system by deputing winter patrolman with proper training and monitoring. Apart from this, surprise checks and footplate inspections are being done late night and early morning at sensitive places.

The ECoR has urged the passengers to dial helpline/enquiry umber 139 to know the current status of trains.
