London: For the first time, battery electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids have overtaken diesel vehicles in sales volume in Europe.
EVs accounted for 21 per cent of overall car sales, with 1,51,737 units being sold. Diesel vehicles stood at 20 per cent, at 1,41,635 units.
Diesel vehicles, which have borne the brunt of Volkswagen’s dieselgate episode, are losing market share. Similarly, petrol vehicles are also losing ground, having dropping to 58 per cent from 65 per cent last year.
The top-selling EV in Europe is Volkswagen ID.3 with 7,904 units, followed by Tesla Model 3 at 7,824 units.
For hybrids, Ford Kuga led the chart with 3,512 units, followed by the Mercedes GLC at 2,670 units.
