Malkangiri: A schoolstudent allegedly committed suicide as she was forced by her parents to attend the physical classes after her school reopened in the district.
According to sources, the parents of the girl, a Class IX student of Bhimarangiri village, told her to go to school which reopened on February 7. As she vehemently refused to attend the physical classes, they reprimanded her for her stubbornness. They also scolded her for whiling away time at home.
Following the parents’ scolding, the girl consumed a bottle of pesticide kept in the house on Friday evening. They rushed their unconscious daughter to the district headquarters hospital.
Though the doctors pumped out the pesticide, she did not recover consciousness and succumbed on Saturday evening. On being informed, police reached the hospital and have registered an unnatural death case.
It may be noted that the state government allowed reopening of schools for the students of Classes VIII to XII on February 7. The schools had remained closed for almost two years due to COVID pandemic.
