Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand ended his disastrous campaign with a loss to long-time rival Vassily Ivanchuk in the ninth and final round of the Legends of Chess online tournament. It was Anand’s eighth defeat in the $150,000 meet for Anand, who finished second from bottom at ninth.
After all four games in the Anand versus Ivanchuk duel ended in draws, the tie-breaker was also inconclusive. The Ukrainian emerged victorious as he played black in the decider.
The 50-year old Indian finished with 7 match points and a solitary win (over Boris Gelfand) on his debut in the Magnus Carlsen Tour.
World champion and world No. 1 Carlsen beat Vladimir Kramnik to finish with an all-win record in the preliminary stage. He will face Russia’s Peter Svidler, while Anish Giri will take on Ian Nepomniachtchi in the semifinals.
