Former Boxing World Champion Saweety Accuses Husband Of Dowry Harassment; FIR Lodged

New Delhi: Former World champion boxer Saweety Boora has lodged an FIR against her husband Deepak Hooda, an Asian Games bronze-winning kabaddi player, accusing him and his family of assaulting her for dowry.

Saweety lodged the FIR in Haryana’s Hisar.

Saweety and Hooda, both Arjuna awardees, got married in 2022.

“An FIR dated February 25 has been lodged based on the complaint by Saweety Boora against her husband Deepak Hooda,” Seema, SHO of a women’s police station in Hisar confirmed on Thursday.

Asked if Hooda has been asked to present his side, the SHO said, “We gave him notice 2-3 times, but he did not turn up.”

Hooda defended his absence due to health issues caused by the ‘trauma’.

“I have submitted a medical certificate and requested a later date. I will certainly go there (police station) but I won’t make a negative comment against my wife. I have not been allowed to meet her,” he told PTI.

Saweety, who bagged gold medal in middleweight class in the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships and silver in the 2014 AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships in light heavyweight category, refused to comment on the matter.

In her complaint, Saweety alleged that she was subjected to torture and assault “for more dowry”.

“A demand for a luxury car was made and met, but her husband beats her, also raises monetary demand,” the SHO said about Saweety’s allegations.

A case has been registered accordingly against Hooda, under Section 85 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, pertaining to a husband or relative of the husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty.

Hooda had contested in the 2024 Haryana Assembly elections as a BJP candidate from Meham constituency in Rohtak district, but lost.

Hooda was a member of the Indian kabaddi team which claimed gold medal at the South Asian Games in 2016 and bronze in the 2014 Asian Games. He has also competed in Pro Kabaddi League.
