The centenary celebrations are being organised by the Postgraduate Department of English, Ravenshaw University, which was established in 1922, and the English Department’s alumni association. Beginning on September 3, the grand celebrations will be a yearlong event that will see the participation of hundreds of alumni, many of them eminent personalities from different spheres of life.

Prof Sanjay Kumar Nayak, Vice Chancellor, Ravenshaw University, is the patron of the centenary celebrations.

Legendary scholars and teachers such as Prof G C Ganguly, Prof K P Sinha, Prof P S Sundaram, Prof V V John, Prof Girija Sankar Ray, Prof Bidhu Bhusan Das, Prof P K Pati and Prof Sarbeshwar Das shaped young minds here.

Among the alumni who passed through the portals of this hallowed institution include Dr Mayadhar Mansingh, Gopinath Mohanty, Manoj Das, Ramakant Rath and Guruparasad Mohanty.

“The Department of English at Ravenshaw University is unique, being a window for its students to world literature, not just English literature but literature in other languages as well… Russian, Greek, Latin and so many others. The department also serves as a window to Indian literature in other languages, including Odia. Which makes it unique. Although it’s the Department of English, students who pass through it develop a love for literature in other languages we well, of other countries and India,” said Pradosh Mohanty, chairman of the organising committee and head of the alumni association, which has over 700 members.

“It is indeed a proud moment for the Department of English. There are not many departments in the country that have completed 100 years. We are indeed proud to have former CJI Dipak Mishra and Dr Yashodhara Mishra as guests and other eminent alumni for the centenary celebrations,” said Prof Sambit Panigrahi, Head of the Department of English, Ravenshaw University.
