Mumbai: Baba Siddique, the former Maharashtra minister, on Thursday announced his resignation from the Congress party.

Siddique had been with the Congress for 48 years. He did not specify the reasons for leaving the party.

“I joined the Indian National Congress party as a young teenager and it has been a significant journey lasting 48 years. Today I resign from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress Party with immediate effect,” he posted on X.

“There’s a lot I would have liked to express but as they say some things are better left unsaid. I thank everyone who has been a part of this journey,” he added.

The 3-time MLA from Vandre West served as a Minister of State for Food & Civil Supplies, Labour and FDA when the Congress-NCP coalition was in power from 2004–08. He is set to join the Ajit Pawar-led National Congress Party (NCP) at an event in Bandra soon, the TOI reported.

The Election Commission of India had recently recognised the Ajit Pawar faction as the real NCP.
