Bhubaneswar: Former MLA from Balikuda, Umesh Chandra Swain, passed away following a cardiac arrest at his residence in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday morning. He was 74.
A native of Machhagaon in Jagatsinghpur district, Swain was born on November 15, 1948. He entered politics after completing his education in 1972.
He was MLA of Balikuda Assembly Constituency from 1977-1980, and 1990-1995 as a Janata Dal candidate, and from 2000-2004, 2004-2009 as an Indian National Congress candidate.
His work extended beyond his role as an MLA as he always went the extra mile, especially during flood and cyclone
A close aide of former Odisha Chief Minister late Biju Patnaik, Swain played a major role in the development of the Talamala area of Jagatsinghpur district.
His last rites will be performed at native Machhagaon village in Jagatsinghpur district, his family said.
