Jharsuguda: The Chhattisgarh High Court on Thursday granted conditional bail to former Odisha MLA Anup Sai who was awarded life imprisonment by a lower court for the murder of a woman and her minor daughter in 2016.
The former Brajarajnagar MLA was awarded life imprisonment by a Raigarh district sessions court in Chhattisgarh court in April this year in connection with the sensational double murder of a woman and her 14-year-old daughter in 2016.
However, another accused Burdhan Toppo, who was also arrested in connection with the case, had been acquitted by the court. Toppo was working as a driver of the former legislator.
The former MLA and his driver had been arrested in February 2020 in connection with the murder of Kalpana Das and her minor daughter at Hamirpur forest in Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh in 2016. The Chhattisgarh police had interrogated around 700 people in connection with the case.
According to police, the former MLA was having an affair with Kalpana. He was allegedly staying with Kalpana and her daughter in a building in Bhubaneswar.
However, Sai reportedly hatched a conspiracy to eliminate Kalpana when she insisted on marriage and sought a share in his property. He reportedly took Kalpana and her daughter to Chhattisgarh in a car in May 2016. The mother-daughter duo was fatally assaulted at Hamirpur forests. The identities of the victims were ascertained by the police after a year, sources said.
