Bhubaneswar: Senior political leader of Odisha and former Lanjigarh MLA Sibaji Majhi died at his native village Danarguda in Bijepur area following a brief illness. He was 55.
Majhi was recently admitted to a hospital in Bhawanipatna after he complained of chest pain and later shifted to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. After receiving treatment, he was discharged and returned to his village, where he breathed his last on Tuesday night, family sources said.
Majhi was the first MLA of the newly formed Lanjigarh Assembly constituency. He represented the constituency from 2009 to 2014 as a Congress member.
During his tenure as legislator, Majhi worked for the development of the tribal-dominated and remote areas of Lanjigarh and Thuamul Rampur.
After the formation of the Special Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Council in Kalahandi district, he became its first chairman. He took several initiatives for the development of tribal and Dalit areas of the district during his tenure.
Leaders from various political parties and social workers have expressed grief over his demise.
