Former Pakistan Prez Pervez Musharraf Passes Away In Dubai

Dubai: Former President of Pakistan, General Pervez Musharraf (Retd) passed away after prolonged illness, at a hospital in Dubai on Sunday, Pakistan’s Geo News reported. He was 79.

The military ruler left for Dubai in March 2016 for medical treatment and had not returned since. He was diagnosed with Amyloidosis, a rare disease that occurs when an abnormal protein builds up in organs and interferes with normal function, in 2018 and had been undergoing treatment at American Hospital Dubai, the report added.

Musharraf assumed the post of Chief Executive after imposing martial law in 1999 and served as the president of Pakistan from 2001 to 2008. He was declared a fugitive in the assassination case of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and the Red Mosque cleric killing case. He was also charged with high treason and given a death sentence in 2019 for suspending the Constitution. The death sentence was later suspended, PTI reported.

His family moved from New Delhi to Karachi in 1947. He joined the Pakistan Army in 1964 after graduating from the Army Staff and Command College, Quetta.
