Former Police Officer Sentenced To 4-Year RI In Bribe Case In Odisha’s Keonjhar

Keonjhar: A Special Vigilance Court sentenced a retired police officer to rigorous imprisonment for 4 years in a bribery case in Odisha’s Keonjhar district on Friday.

As per the case, the Vigilance had arrested Kalucharan Swain, former officer in-charge (OIC) of Baria police station in the district, for taking a bribe of Rs 6,000 from a complainant to strike off his parents’ name from dowry case registered in the police station. Following investigation, the Vigilance had filed the charge sheet.

After hearing the case, the Special Judge, Vigilance, Keonjhar convicted Swain and sentenced him to undergo rigorous imprisonment (RI) for 4 years and imposed a fine of Rs 3,000 on him. In default of payment of the fine, the court ordered him to undergo RI for a further period of 2 months.

The court also sentenced the retired OIC to undergo RI for 3 years and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on him for the offence U/s 7 PC Act, 1988. In default of payment of fine, Swain would undergo further RI for 2 months. Both the sentences would run concurrently, the court ruled.

Odisha Vigilance will now move the competent authority for stoppage of pension of Swain following his conviction.
