Former RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das Appointed Principal Secretary-2 To PM Modi

Bhubaneswar: Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das, who hails from Odisha, has been appointed as the Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This has been approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC). An order to this effect was issued by the Department of Personnel Training (DoPT) of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions on Saturday. He will be serving as PS to PM along with P K Mishra, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister-1.

As per the order, the appointment of Das will be “co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”

A former IAS officer of the 1980-batch Tamil Nadu cadre, Das had taken over as the RBI Governor in December 2018, and retired last year. Das demitted the office of RBI governor on December 10, marking the end of his six-year tenure as the 25th Governor of the central bank.

In his six years as the central bank chief, he faced many challenges, including global economic uncertainties like the Covid-19 pandemic, and the Russia-Ukraine war.

As RBI Governor, Das was ranked among the top three central bankers globally for two consecutive years by the US-based magazine Global Finance. Das received an ‘A+’ rating in the Global Finance Central Banker Report Cards 2024, sources said.

The 67-year-old, who hails from Odisha’s capital Bhubaneswar, had served in various capacities for the Union and Tamil Nadu governments during his career in the IAS. With the Centre, he served as Economic Affairs Secretary, Revenue Secretary and Fertilizers Secretary at various stages.
