Berhampur: Police on Wednesday arrested four persons for allegedly begging on the streets under Berhampur Municipal Corporation limits, by posing as physically challenged with crutches in hand.

The accused have been identified as Ajay Kumar, Anil Kumar, Mero, and Jashobant Kumar of Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

“Police had been keeping a watch on Anil and Joshobant, who were found begging as persons with speech and physical disabilities during patrolling. They were detained after investigation revealed that they were faking it. During interrogation, the duo informed police about two other members of their gang and that they were all from Uttar Pradesh,” Berhampur SP Sarvana Vivek M told the media.

The SP further said that they had been begging in Berhampur for last 6 months. “The four have been arrested on cheating charges and sent to jail. Further investigation is on to ascertain whether they have any criminal antecedent,” he added.
