Cuttack: Freedom fighter Makar Charan Das breathed his last around 6.40 am on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Odisha’s Cuttack city. He was 99.
He is survived by a son. His mortal remains were cremated at Banpur under Derabis block with the guard of honours.
A native of Hatabanapur, a small village/hamlet in Derabish tehsil in Kendrapada district Das had joined the freedom struggle inspired by Mahatma Gandhi and was jailed for opposing the British rule. He was felicitated by the President on ‘August Kranti Divas’ in 2020 for his contribution to the freedom struggle.
Minister of Food Supply and Consumer Welfare, Cooperation and Higher Education Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak mourned the death of the veteran freedom fighter and expressed deepest condolences to his family.
The minister described Das as a ‘pride’ of Kendrapada district.
