Fresh FIR Against Rahul, Priyanka Over Alleged Assault On Cops During Wednesday Protest

New Delhi: Delhi Police have filed another first information report against Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, accusing them of attacking police personnel and disrupting official duties during Wednesday’s opposition protest in the capital, according to police sources, PTI reported.

The fresh case, registered on Thursday, comes a day after the two senior Congress leaders were booked along with party supporters for allegedly entering the Akashvani Bhavan complex without permission during the INDIA bloc’s demonstration.

Police sources said the second FIR relates to the confrontation that unfolded during the Congress protest on Wednesday. Besides Rahul and Priyanka, several other Congress leaders and party workers involved in the demonstration have also been named in the case.

The police are currently verifying the allegations and assessing the role of each person named in the FIR, the sources added.

A total of 91 protesters, including several Members of Parliament and prominent opposition figures, were detained during Wednesday’s demonstration, police said.

Rahul Gandhi had spearheaded the INDIA bloc’s street protest before being detained once again along with a large number of MPs. The confrontation began after police intercepted buses carrying the protesters, who were reportedly heading to Jantar Mantar for an unannounced sit-in following a lunch meeting at a South Indian vegetarian restaurant on Janpath.

Priyanka Gandhi, along with other women leaders, lay down on the road while holding a copy of the Constitution. They were later forcibly lifted and placed in police buses as opposition members raised slogans demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The protest saw participation from MPs belonging to the Congress, Trinamool Congress, CPI(M), CPI, RJD, IUML and several other opposition parties.
