Bhubaneswar: A fresh low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal on Monday, raising the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rain in several parts of Odisha in next few days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
Under the influence of the upper air cyclonic circulation, a low-pressure area has formed over northeast Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood in the morning.
The weather agency further stated that another low-pressure area is likely to form over east-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around September 25.
Moving west-northestwards, it is very likely to become a depression over northwest and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal off south Odisha -north Andhra Pradesh coasts around September 26.
It is very likely to cross south Odisha -north Andhra Pradesh coasts around September 27, the IMD added.
The systems are likely to trigger heavy rain in Odisha till September 27. Squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph may also prevail along and off Odisha coast & North Bay of Bengal from September 21 to 25.
The weather agency said that the intensity of rain may increase on September 22 with heavy to very heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph likely in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts.
Heavy rain along with thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may also occur at one or two places in Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Kandhamal, Kalahandi, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur. There is also a warning of thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph at one or two places in Jajpur, Cuttack, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir and Nabarangpur districts.
Heavy rain may continue for the next 5 days. On September 23, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm/lightning and gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph may occur at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati.
